Cartisien provided an elegant solution that reduced incident response time to nothing.
The challenge was redesigning the North American Aerospace Defense commands application used to identify airborne anomalies from the myriad of radar stations, complex geospatial weather sources, and known topographical elements across the continental US to make one determination.
The application works by ingesting live radar feeds, Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) air traffic control data, and flight plan data from the Federal Aviation Administration, as well as weather data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration displaying 400 to 500 million records every day.
Two apps were created by splitting up the workload of the millions of radar points an operator would have to sift through during a shift. The first was to identify radar contacts quickly, mark them, and then pass them on to the radar track for further review. An operator could easily do this by using several tools the app provided. From the ability to change contrast, zoom level, and isometric views, paired with overlaying weather data and a 90-minute rewindable view of all radar contacts over the United States, the operator.
Once the radar contact or track was determined to need further interrogation, a second operator could quickly pull up both a historical reference or current time reference, see the tracking data and kinematics along with weather, TFR, and NOTAMs that may assist in further identifying the intentions of radar contact.

Next-gen cloud computing, on-demand filtering, aggregation, time-series, geo-join, and geofence analysis on massive streaming and historical geospatial data sets for defense are here today.
